Low rolling resistance tires are ones that are designed to minimize the energy wasted as heat, while the tires roll down the road. This improves the fuel efficiency of a vehicle or reduces the effort needed in the case of human powered ones. Approximately five to fifteen percent of the fuel consumed by a typical car may be used to overcome rolling resistance.

A preliminary study by the California Energy Commission in 2003 was highly publicized and estimated that adoption of low rolling resistance tires could save 1.5-4.5% of all gasoline consumption. However, that information was also insufficient to compare safety and other characteristics.

Auto manufacturers in the U.S. typically equip new vehicles with tires that have lower rolling resistance than their average after market replacements. This is done to meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards. Additionally, most hybrid vehicles come standard with low rolling resistance tires.

Although consumers may be concerned about low rolling resistance tires, a Union of Concerned Scientists newsletter once stated that they “meet the same federal standards for tread wear, traction and temperature resistance as regular tires.” The life span that comes along with these tires may be up to par with that of conventional tires.

Some manufacturers that currently offer fuel efficient, low rolling resistant tires are Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone and BF Goodrich.

For more information on more fuel efficient, low rolling resistance tires, contact your local tire manufacturer and/or dealer or conduct a quick online search.
