Avoid Auto Theft Issues

Posted on June 18th, 2010 by Keri DeVrieze

I’m sure we’ve all had some type of experience with a car break in or theft. Here are a few basics to keep you on your toes and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of an auto related theft.

Make sure that all your windows are rolled completely up and that your car is locked, including all points of entry such as a sunroof, trunk or door hatch. The smallest crack of space allows thieves the ability to access your car and possessions.

Keep your keys safe, even when you’re at home. Don’t even leave your keys in your car. This may sound over reactive, however if a thief breaks into your garage, you don’t want to make it easy for them to steal your car. Today, with factory and after market alarms getting smarter it’s becoming more challenging for thieves to quickly and easily hot wire your car. That has led to a surge in home break ins, purely so thieves can steal the car keys. Then they simply come back later and drive off with the car.

Although this may seem obvious, never leave your keys in your car while you get gas or run into a store quickly. In a split second, after you pump your gas, a thief can jump into your car and drive off while you’re inside paying.

Be cautious about where you choose to park, especially at night. Even if you have an alarm system, it’s always best to spend the money on a secured parking facility if available. If you want to go one step further, take your parking ticket or voucher with you when you exit the car. If a thief attempts to leave with your car, he’s already drawing unwanted attention to himself while trying to exit. If you do park on a public street, always park in the best list area you can find.

Make sure that you utilize your garage space by actually parking in it. If you don’t have a garage, try to park under a street light or motion detected house light if possible.

Although common sense, most people only give thought to the belongings in their car during the holidays. On a day to day basis, make sure not to leave your possessions in plain view in your vehicle, especially if you have no window tinting. It’s important to make sure that you never leave radar detectors, cell phones, computers or other valuables in clear sight.

Keeping yourself, your car and your belongings safe should always be on the forefront of your mind. Although it may be challenging to think like a thief, be aware and cautious of the things that may tempt them so you don’t become a victim.
