After yesterday, you’ve already checked out my tips for traveling with a pet. However if you’re planning a road trip with two legged children and not just your furry friends, then here are some basic helpful hints for your journey.

Leave early in the morning before breakfast. This will hopefully give you a few hours of drive time before you need to stop and eat. And, if you’re lucky the kids will sleep for most of that time!

If you’re planning on stopping for the night at a hotel, it’s always a smart idea to pack an overnight bag. If you pack everything you and the children will need then you won’t have to unload all the luggage in your car.

I realize that not all parents are fond of electronic entertainment, however bringing along a portable DVD player will offer up inexpensive entertainment for long car rides. Don’t forget the headphones so the kids can watch their movies while you still have access to the radio or your own music.

If you don’t have a portable DVD player, then focus on car games. My personal favorite is “I Spy”. Pick out something in the car while your kids have to ask yes and/or no questions until they figure out the object you’ve chosen. Then there’s always the good old license plate game. Keep track of every state you’ve seen on the way to your destination. Whoever sees the most states is the winner.

If you’re looking to cut costs and have the room, pack up a cooler for the trip. It’s always a bonus if you take along your little ones favorite snacks, drinks and sandwiches so you don’t have to spend the time and money on fast food.

Frequent stops are important with traveling with kids. Although three hours may not seem like much to us adults. To a child, several hours can feel like eternity. If the kids are awake, try to stop every few hours even if it’s simply to let them stretch their legs in the gas station.

Most importantly, when packing up for your trip, make sure you bring along a pillow and blanket, first aid kit, any daily medication your kids take and whatever you know normally entertains your children. If they love it at home, then hopefully they’ll love it just as much in the car!

Happy road tripping!
