Anybody trading?
What is considered a clunker?

Not sure on the exact details, but the car you are trading in has to get a certain number less mpg then the car you by (you have to trade for a more efficient car)...and heck no, I'm perfectly happy w/ my stang :D

my car ain't no clunker ..so I guess I can't be involved in this

at one of the dealer's here there is a big dumpster on their lot with a car dumped in it ...ya know, for some people that's all they got and can afford and to see them dump a car in there (that looked perfectly good condition) kind of made me mad :)

yeah not looking to get rid of any of my rides. It is a shame that they aren't doing anything other than crushing them.

Didn't they run out of money already? Lol. My best friend's fiancee went to trade in his 92 Corolla and they wouldn't take it! That thing is a true clunker...but I guess because it still got "20 mpg"...so he had to pay $1000 cash deposit on his brand new Scion TC. That's a nice car!

I dont have a clunker car ..There considered high milage junkers that get bad gas mileage and really just need to be off the road ...( seen quit a few of those when i worked at the car auction ) ..This may just take away alot of there cars cause once you trade the clunker in its completely destroyed there not even putting them in a junk yard to be recycled there crushing all of them

Which they should recyle them.. but yeah... by Friday according to the news they are asking for 2 Billion to help keep it going!

I know, last night on the news they were talking about it...and in the background is a black 5.0 about to get smashed! I'm like really....you couldn't have found a stang enthusiast to buy that instead of giving it to the dealer to mash up lol!? I think the whole thing is kind of a cop out...the auto companies didn't want the stipulations of the bail outs...but that's exactly what this is. I have to wonder what's up with the relationship between the gov't and the auto makers. I mean it's great for people if they really want a new car....but I think it's a little unfair to all the other industries that are hurting like crazy. Just my 2 cents!

That is pretty much the point tho, to get those old cars out of circulation so that MORE people will buy new(er) cars. And why would they want to help people find parts for those same old cars when they can make THEM have to buy new too...

I'm not saying that it's right, but hopefully it will help the environment by taking less efficient cars off the road, whether or not we come out ahead is another story

I just hope that the people taking advantage of the "program" can afford the new loan and that they don't end up just adding to the high amount of repos right now because they approved high risk buyers, etc!

How about a break for all of us that aren't out accumulating tons of debt, filing BK and can keep ourselves within our budget HA? ;)

My husband has a Clunker...top of the line 15 MPG's'1999 Ford Explorer!!, but is running good ,hauls things and only gets driven to the store or his/my job. However he/we cant picture seeing it in a dumpster.Even if is a gasser.

Yeah he could get $3500-4500 for it but he doesnt want the new car payment. He also has an old GMC like 1989 he works on(Lawn decoration) but it ain't running cant hurt the enviroment."Just my nerves".

Traded in June my '07 Toyota, for my new Mustang after it got rear ended in a car accident last December. So if I ever get compensated for my injury and lost ,I'll buy my husband whatever he wants but still I dont think he'll let the Explorer go...and that might have to be OK. Cause how many people dont even have a vehicle to drive.I rather give to someone needy than have it destroy.Thats what I feel about that today!

Yeah, I def don't think it's going to make people run out and buy a car if they don't already want to!

My 2000 Explorer actually gets better gas mileage than my car lol!

I wouldn't trade even if I was planning on buying a new car.
Another dumb idea from the government. It's great to know that I'm helping people buy new cars. I hope this next "bill" fails in the Senate

I have to agree with Keri's point on this one, hopefully the approved buyers are people who aren't just going to trash the vehicles and then just end up having them re possessed...my co workers and I discussed this Monday. I find it to be total crap that people I saw getting evicted out of "crackhouse" rentals or file for bankruptcy now own some of the nicest houses I deliver to....that's another story though

My Mustang is considered a clunker. But if the government wants to crush it, they will have to crush it with ME in it. lol

In MY opinion, they are using just as many emissions and energy to MAKE all these new cars than the old cars the government is essentially destroying were using. So if they are trying to market the "environmental impact" crap, I don't buy it.

Most of you know my hubby works at a Toyota dealer...

What he's seeing is those that are trading are mainly purchasing 4 cyl. Corollas. (the cheapest thing on the lot) Most trade ins so far have not been muscle or performance, but having said that there was a 70-something TA, and a bubble Mustang traded in. :(

The amount of discount depends on how much your trade "affects" the environment. (a V8 traded will get you more of a discount than a V6) Also, you have to have owned the vehicle for over a year (to keep peeps from purchasing a $500 clunker just to trade...)

What burns me the most? In my book, this is the same as the Democratic housing mvmt. Giving MY tax dollars so that Joe-blow can buy a new vehicle, which he probably can't afford anyway. Just another way to make ME support others. Grrr... Half the people that buy from Danny's dealership are financed through the dealer's auto credit...outrageous interest rates, and there's a device in the car: you don't make your payment, car no start. Uhhh...there's a good indication that credit should've never been extended to begin with!

In addition, the engines & drivetrains of trade ins HAVE to be destroyed. No parting out, nothing. Further declining the ability to restore/preserve part of our heritage.

yep, just once I'd like to see the govt. dipping into their pockets instead of ours.

so sad that they have to be destroyed... I mean really... someone with some sense about Heritage and all that needs to be there and be like... Here is 4500 bucks.. that one goes with me... Its just sad and wrong and upsets me a little.

Yeah, the local Toyota dealership sold 25 cars THE FIRST DAY that this was implemented. They were putting their "clunkers" across the street on a backlot, and mostly what we saw were beat up pickup trucks, old hoopty Caddys and the like, but we did spot a Red mid 90's Trans Am that I wish I could have gotten before they crushed it... It was nice. :(

Wouldn't it "stimulate" the economy more to sell the parts off the cars that are getting turned in? O_o

Can I point and laugh at the Obama voters yet!?!?!

I know....I figure by the time this is done, car parts for my Explorer will probably cost me and arm and a leg LOL!
